If you are someone who plays bingo or slots online then you will have heard the term ‘wagering requirements’, whether you are a novice to online gambling or someone who is more experienced. But what are wagering requirements when it comes to playing online bingo or slots online?
Wagering requirements explained
These are the conditions that have to be met to be able to withdraw money that is linked to a bonus deal. Although the online bingo landscape has changed quite significantly since it was first available in that some sites now offer ‘no wagering requirements’ bonus deals, they are still something you will come across.
A wagering requirement is a minimum that has to be spent to be able to withdraw the winnings associated with a bonus that you have accepted. Usually, this is a multiple of the bonus amount you were awarded.
They can also be referred to as playthrough requirements.
On this page, we try and make wagering requirements easier to understand by providing answers to some of the most commonly asked questions around this area of online bingo.
Why do sites have wagering requirements?
The answer to this question is answered differently from brand to brand but essentially, no site wants to give you money just for the sake of it. They are a business and as you are hoping to win money, they launched with the sole purpose of making money.
Giving away bonuses that don’t have wagering requirements would mean a brand would lose money hand over fist. For example, let’s take Wink Bingo’s offer available in March 2020*.

The Offer
400% bonus bundle (up to £100 per bonus!)
The Terms and Conditions
New players only. Deposit min £10 to get 200% bingo bonus + 200% games bonus (max £100 per bonus). To withdraw bingo bonus & related wins, wager 2x the amount of deposit + bonus funds. To withdraw games bonus & related wins, wager 50x the amount of bonus. Bonus wins capped at £100, exc. jackpot wins. Wagering requirements vary by game. Deposit balance can be withdrawn at any time. Withdrawal restrictions & Further T&C’s apply.
In layman’s terms using a £10 deposit:
- £10 with a 200% bingo bonus = £30 x 2 (wagering requirements multiple) = £60 to be spent before any winnings will be eligible for withdrawal
- £10 with a 200% games bonus = £30 x 50 (wagering requirements multiple) – £1,500 to be spent before any winnings will be eligible for withdrawal
Wink Bingo does allow you to withdraw from your account before meeting the requirements shown above but, should you do so, you will lose all linked bonuses and winnings derived from those bonuses.
Now, imagine if they didn’t have any play through attached to the offer. You could deposit £10, get a £20 bingo bonus and a £20 games bonus and win and instantly be able to withdraw. If you have deposited just £10 and won, let’s say £100, and then withdrew – the site would be down by £90.
Wagering requirements aren’t there to make you lose money, but they are a way to encourage you to continue playing.
Sites do say that wagering requirements are also an anti-money-laundering tool.
Why are play through requirements higher at one site over another?
To be honest, that’s just the nature of the beast. Online bingo is a very competitive industry and the larger operators can offer better deals than some of the smaller companies simply because their bottom line is healthier.
How do you know if you have met the requirements attached to a bonus?
It depends on the site that you are playing at. The majority of brands will have an area that shows the bonus that you have left to wager.
It could be that it shows when you try to withdraw funds and even this varies from brand to brand. One will show it as a percentage value and a cash amount that still needs to be wagered whilst another will just show you the bonus that you stand to forfeit if you decide to proceed with the withdrawal.
Where will you find details of the wagering required for a bonus?
Any bonus on offer, by any brand, has to have the terms and the conditions of the offer just one click away from where the bonus is listed. This is part of the licencing conditions of any site that offers a gambling product to any UK player.
It is standard practice for a short synopsis of the bonus offer to be shown directly under the offer with a clickable link available to read the full T&C’s that will include the wagering requirements of the deal.
Do you have to accept a bonus and it’s associated wagering?
The majority of bingo sites now offer you the option of taking a bonus or not. Some even offer you a choice of bonuses to suit your play, including the latest new bingo sites. For example, some players prefer a bonus for their bingo play whilst others choose to opt for an offer that favours those who like to spin the slots.
If you don’t take the bonus, you don’t have wagering requirements to meet.
What are the alternative options to wagering requirements?
As the online bingo landscape changes to encompass new rules and regulations, we have seen the introduction of a new style of welcome bonus. The ‘no wagering requirements’ welcome offer can be found at many sites now and these remove the play through associated with a cash match bonus style offer.
Below is the welcome offer from one such site, Bingo Besties, in March 2020*.

Wagering Requirements – Our Summary
All bonus offers and bingo promotions are used to both encourage players to play and entice new members through the virtual doors at the site. The associated wagering requirements and their terms and conditions should be clear.
What you do need to remember is to read those Terms and Conditions or T&Cs in order to ensure you understand how taking a welcome offer or bonus deal could affect your withdrawal options.
Take into consideration your bingo budget and how taking a bonus will give you more playing time, but remember that it may mean you cannot withdraw without a loss of bonus money or associated winnings derived from the bonus.
